Because while they tried to make it over-intelligent they missed the basics ... probably your dates have some leading or trailing spaces ... when you remove them and Ctrl + 1 , specify the correct date format as you could be able than to right click , o , o to sort asceding and Shift + F10 , o , o to sort descending ... I consider this as a bug ... since if I do have the understanding to set the cell range as being a cell range of dates I do expect that Excel will remove the leading and trailing spaces for me ... It tries to guess so many other things ... and quite often annoyingly ... but it fails in the simple trim ( value ) test ...
